Yoga is an ancient technique originating from India and produces a union of body and soul. It is not only a good exercise technique to cure the ills of the body and to keep in good shape but it is also excellent for mental and spiritual health. Practiced from time immemorial, different techniques of yoga have evolved. The Kriya yoga is a system consisting of yogic techniques that accelerate spiritual development and bring on a deep state of serenity and ultimately, communion with God and nature. Kriya yoga includes discipline of the body, mental control and meditation.
What is Kriya Yoga?
The words Kriya Yoga sum up everything. Derived from the Sanskrit root word "kri", which means "to act and react" it denotes cause and effect. Yoga means union with infinity. Thus Kriya Yoga means union with infinity through certain actions. It is also believed in Kriya yoga that that by enlightening the three qualities of light, vibration and sound simultaneously with proper concentration, posture and breathing through application of a series of techniques, a Kriya yoga practictioner is able to penetrate the deepest levels of the unconscious mind. The disciplined path of Kriya Yoga consists of many different kinds of teaching with different angles to it. One looks at it as a process of beginning with self introspection through breathing controls. Having seen how Kriya yoga affects us spiritually, it is also important at the same time, to know how it affects the practitioner physically. The techniques of Kriya yoga decarbonize the blood and recharge it with oxygen. This is the simple psycho physiological concept behind the Kriya yoga. The atoms of this extra oxygen produced are directed to rejuvenate the brain and spinal cord. This stops the accumulation of dirty blood and the practitioner is able to prevent the decay of tissues. These oxygen cells can also be converted into pure energy, thus providing a path to reach cosmic consciousness. A technique well known in ancient India, it was lost in the later years due to priestly secrecy and the indifference of the people who were combating different invasions of people and cultures to their land. Lahiri Mahasaya revived it in recent history in 1861. He received the secret from Mahavatar Babaji. He spread it throughout India. But it was with the book of Yogananda, "An autobiography of a yogi" that this technique gained prominence and spread throughout the world. Learning Kriya Yoga can help to maintain your physical health as well as helping your spiritual growth.
Energization Exercises
A series of exercises developed by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1916 to prepare the body for meditation. Regular practice promotes mental and physical relaxation and develops dynamic will power. The technique enables one to consciously draw energy into the body, purifying and strengthening it, and making it easier to direct the energy inward in meditation. The set consists of 39 exercises. Its based on the principles of 'Tense with will and relax and feel' and 'Double Breathing'. Various exercises involve tensing various parts of the body gradually with low, medium and finally high tension till the body part or muscle vibrates with energy and then gradually relaxing it. You will notice a perceptible lightness in this part. A lot of others exerices involve tensing/relaxing mentioned above accompanied with double inhalation followed by double exhalation or moving certain parts with double inhalation/exhalation.
The Hong-Sau Technique
A simple but highly effective technique that helps to develop one's latent powers of concentration. Through practice of this technique one learns to withdraw thought and energy from outer distractions so that they may be focused on any goal to be achieved or problem to be solved. Or one may direct that concentrated attention toward a deepening perception of the Divine Consciousness within.
The Aum Technique
A powerful technique of meditation that expands one's awareness beyond the limitations of body and mind, and leads to direct personal experience of that Divine Consciousness which underlies and upholds all life. |
